What is Custom Dimensions?

Google Analytics reports have two kinds of data:

  1. Dimensions.
  2. Metrics.

Dimensions are the different kinds of attributes that’s on our website.

Metrics are other quantitative measurement of those dimensions that you were looking at.

So in the backend of your Google Analytics report, you’ll see all the dimensions in the rows and metrics in the columns.

If you want to look at more dimensions, then you’ll have to create custom dimensions.

Google Analytics will allow you to add and track as much dimensions as you want to add.

So custom dimensions are just like the other default dimensions that show up, but you’ll be adding them yourself to the report. So if you want to collect, track and analyze data that’s happening on your website, that Google Analytics doesn’t track you can use custom dimensions.

Benefits of tracking custom dimensions: Tracks performance of every element that you add to the dimension.

You can add elements of the website like Author, Category, Tag, etc. and it will show up.

So If you install MonsterInsights, you’ll be able to set up these other custom dimensions that you never thought of was possible inside Google Analytics.

These are dimensions such as:

  • Logged in.
  • User Id.
  • Post Type.
  • Author.
  • Category.
  • Published at.
  • Tags.
  • SEO Score.
  • Focus Keyword.
